HORIZON (2005)
Dimensions: 14x4x6 cm.
Material: Glass, metal casing
In Horizon (2005) two prosthetic eyes made in glass are mounted on the wall at eye level. The white of the eyes is filled with numerous small blood vessels, suggesting that the eyes must have been weeping. The eyes epitomize an universal witness, who has seen the suffering of people in all ages. Mounted at eye-level, the object stares back at us, making us aware of our objectifying gaze and at the same time acknowledging our status as subjects.
The starting-point for the work was the history of medicine, and specifically the image of a weeping skeleton from Andreas Vesalius’ famous anatomical atlas “De Humani Corporis Fabrica“ from 1543.
